The interest generated by our company’s niche service has surprised even me. I wish I could say that I dreamed up the idea, but it came about through a step-wise progression, serendipity, a lot of help, and keeping my eyes open to the possibilities. Which is why the path that brought me here may appear meandering. Some years ago, I graduated valedictorian from Twentynine Palms High School (okay, maybe not the greatest feat in a class of 250). I received a bachelor’s degree in Math with Computer Science from the University of California, Riverside; followed by 10 years flying F-4 Phantom fighter jets for the Air Force and the California Air National Guard. Yes, it was as thrilling and challenging as portrayed by Tom Cruise in Top Gun, but not nearly as glamorous. Besides, all of the cool call-signs like Maverick and Ice Man are only used in the movies. Mine was Baby Face (which was a whole lot better than my buddy, "Pear Bod"). Not willing to break completely away from flying, I worked for 3 years at the China Lake Naval Weapons Center on the original Navstar GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) system, before it went civilian. I returned to the Palm Springs area, and became a part time college professor in Computer Science while gaining 14 years experience in corporate and municipal accounting at the City of Palm Springs and Eisenhower Medical Center (which contains the famous Betty Ford Center). Which finally brought me to taxes - where I probably should have started . . .(right after flying jets, that is). I've been in the tax business since 1990, and we have been specializing in travel nurses since 1995. My staff & I present seminars on the tax issues facing healthcare travelers, as well as writing the monthly "Tax Tip" department article for HealthCare Traveler magazine and the Money Matters department for Locum Life magazine. I'm an IRS Enrolled Agent, and I also provide expert witness consultation on the legal tax treatment of travelers by recruitment agencies and their payroll and recruitment staff. My staff and I at kobaly are located in Morongo Valley, California, about 15 miles north of Palm Springs. We specialize in the tax situations faced by traveling nurses, per diem nurses, Locum Tenens physicians, and other mobile health care professionals. |
